Three devices one app – part 1: The Mac

February 3, 2010 at 2:38 pm

The ongoing delay of MindNode Pro 1.5 and the recent iPad announcement considerable increased the volume of questions from users. Starting with todays blog post I’ll try to give you an overview of that current state of my application on the Mac, iPhone and iPad.

I’m currently developing the next major revision of MindNode for the mac. Originally my plan for release 1.5 was to only add image support however as development went on I also focused on other areas of the application. MindNode 1.5 will add the following features and enhancements:

  • Image and file link support (MindNode Pro only): I was hoping to combine both features and I’m very happy with the result.
  • Document-wide spellchecking: I know a lot of people are waiting for this and I’m very happy to finally support it. Due to a bug in the framework I’m sadly unable to provide grammar checking in the initial release.
  • Redesigned node constraining: I always disliked how node constraining was visualized in the inspector. In 1.5 I completely redesigned this part of the inspector. The redesign also required to drop one feature: Starting with 1.5 it’s no longer possible to create unconstrained nodes.
  • Refreshed designs for on canvas tools like “node creation well” and folding tool.
  • Text alignment: The text alignment control will now also work when not in edit mode.
  • (No 64-bit support: Theoretically MindNode now fully supports running in 64 bit. However a bug in the Apple framework currently prevents me to release a 64bit binary.)

I’m pretty happy how this release turns out, however I don’t have a release date for you at the moment.

nice, can’t wait for the day released.
    keep going on!

  2. Andrew Says:

    Awesome, looking forward to it!

Would it be possible to draw shapes and freehand (both in fill and outlines) over the nodes. This would be useful when I brainstorm in that it would help me to group and annotate on top of nodes. Better yet if these shapes remain as editble objects. I think a good model to follow would be PDF editing in Adobe Acrobat, and being able to add notes and stickies would be incredible. Basically I dream of beingable to use Mindnode like a paper napkin. I currently use Mindnode Pro with an Axiotron Modbook and I love it. I would love to see more tablet centric features in coming releases.

    Hei

I look forward to each new release, but I’m always a little scared you might be pressured into making Mindnode more complicated.

I bought iMindmap a while back and keep it updated too, but Mindnode Pro is the app I use because of its simplicity.

Please keep it that way as much as possible :)

    Thanks

I like this tool. Hopefully we get it soon

Thanks for your continued work on this program! It’s an essential part of my thinking on some key projects, yet I was drawn to it because it looks so compelling and uncomplicated compared to other programs I’ve used. The last thing I want when trying to organise my cluttered thoughts is an overwhelming interface!

Ironically, though, new features are always fun.

    Best of luck!

Absolutely adore this app. Use it every day professionally and personally. Works a treat for GTD. Keep up the great developing. iPad version would rock my world.

  8. Andy Rawlins Says:

I like Andrew Phang’s suggestions. I’m not intending to get an iPad (not until it has multi-tasking anyway) but I do use a pen tablet and, even with mouse, freehand stuff could be great. I also agree with the guys who say keep it simple though. Pictures and links will be great.

Thank you for all your positive feedback! This is really appreciated!

A hearty thank you for a wonderful too that simplifies and renders elegant that which so many other programs over-complicate. It’s not “features” that make an app useful : it’s the vision of the creator which transforms it into something that opens up infinite possibilities for the user. I started using MindNode four months ago; it’s the sign of a good app that the “room for improvement” areas in no way hamper creativity and productivity. Keep up the great work – I’m really excited by the list of new features you presented us and look forward to part 2 (and MindNode 1.5…)!

Have you placed templates on your list of future features? That would be a big help!

  11. Christian Madajski Says:

This could prove to make some seriously interesting mind maps. Can’t wait for release day!

  12. Markus Says:

    Bryan,
templates are currently not on the list. I’m not convinced that they add value. However themes are under close consideration. Which can be seen as a first step towards templates … I guess.

  13. Tom Fenn Says:

Support for images? Hooray!!! Finally!! This make me very happy!

(Will be getting an iPad, as soon as camera support comes)

  14. Claus Says:

    Hi!

    Thanks for at great product.

    Suggestion for a future features:
to be able to draw ex. lines to seperate levels i the mindmap/flowchart (which I use it for).
to be able to choose several points where to attach a connection, like in PowerPoint.

Am also looking so much forward to image support.

Do you have a feature request/suggestions forum other than in your own blog?

    Keep up the good work.

    Regards
    Claus

  15. Markus Says:

    Claus:
Have you looked at cross connections? Perhaps they solve your first request.
Several attachment points are currently not on my roadmap. I think they would add too much complexity.

You can also post feature suggestions in the Google Group or email them to me directly.

    Markus

Good stuff – especially spelling (my weakness) – can’t come too soon for me.

I second request for themes (esp. colours), was looking at kuler today thinking be cool if could save some of these in mindnode.

this is great news, i can’t wait for this to come out!

  18. Gerry Says:

any idea which month the update will be available?! will it intergrate with the iphoto library!

my favourite app at the moment! well done:)

  19. Qtus Says:

I use NovaMind because of the image support but have bought your program since it has such a clean interface and is so easy to work with. When you add image support I will throw out NovaMind for good. I also hope that the exported PDF-files will continue to be searchable within Devonthink. I’m really looking foward to next release. Keep up the good job!

  20. Dima Says:

It would be a great to have brainstorming feature in MindNode Pro with unlinked nodes and timer such as in MindManager.
