_Netcasting
There has been a lot of talk lately about Apple sending cease and desist letters to companies using the term podcasting in product names. It more or less turned out that the letter was ripped out of context (a very good audio summary of the issue) and a lot of folks in the podcasting scene overreacted. The dust has settled a bit, but comments about Leo Laporte’s plan to change the name to netcasting keep popping up. This is probably due to his keynote at last weekends Podcast and Portable Media Expo, but this really doesn’t matter. What matters is that the term netcasting is in my opinion a bad choice. When I think about a netcast, I think about streaming media. This is something very different to podcasting. I understand that keeping the term podcasting could cause potential issues in the future, but in the mean time the community should stick with it. It’s simply the best desciption for a location and time independent “cast”.
