Having fun with transitions: Dive-In

June 17, 2006 at 8:05 am

The “Dive-In” transition was one of two transitions that didn’t make it into the Flash-Viewer. I created a small example that shows how this transition can be simulated. Please beware that getting this to work can be a very frustrating task.

Tips:

  • The target frame has to be in the center of the current frame. Otherwise it won’t work properly.
  • When positioning the target panel/frame use the inspector. This avoids rounding issues.

WCCA & WWDC

Alexander Danner’s and Neal von Flue’s Five Ways to Love a Cockroach has been nominated in the “Outstanding Use of Infinite Canvas” category of the Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards. Congratulations to Alexander and Neal!

EDIT: Neal posted a short summary of how he used the IC application in “Five Ways to Love a Cockroach” on his blog.

Today I got word from the Apple Developer Connection that I’ve been awarded with a WWDC 2006 Student Scholarship. This means that I’m getting a free ticket for the Worldwide Developers Conference which will take place in the second week of August in San Francisco. Although I’ll have to pay travel and lodging out of my own pocket, I’ll definitely go there. :-)

ICPrototype1 - “The Expanding Canvas”

June 8, 2006 at 7:35 pm

For some time now I’ve been playing around with the idea of an application based on the infinite canvas concept, but designed for collecting, grouping and storing different kind of data (images, movies, text, websites, …). Think of it as a mashup of the Finder and the IC.app.

I never started developing this application, because I’m not sure if this concept really works. Well there is only one way to test a concept: try it out in a prototype. So here is the first prototype in a series of prototypes. In this prototype I demonstrate a canvas that automatically expands itself if the users needs more space. This way the users is able to enjoy all the benefits of an infinite canvas, but the usability is greatly improved due to the fact that it is nearly impossible to get lost. While developing this prototype I tried to write very clean and expandable code. So hopefully I’ll be able to further improve it and turn it in something useful some day.

You can download ICPrototype1 on the new Prototype page (Development -> Prototype) The app requires 10.4, but it should work on 10.3 too. To test the app, drag an imagefile from the Finder onto the canvas and move it around to expand the canvas.

A new IC comic: Maroon Part 43

June 5, 2006 at 7:41 pm

There haven’t been any new InfiniteCanvas comics lately, so you can imagine that it made my day when I got an email from Tymothi Godek telling me that last weeks installment of Derik Badman’s webcomic “Maroon” was done using my application. I’m very happy to see that there are still (new) users out there.
